Should I get the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine?

Both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been approved for use by the FDA. They are available to all adults over the age of 18 and both vaccines provide good safety and efficacy against COVID-19.

Deciding between the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine is mostly a personal choice. However, there are a few points to keep in mind that may make one vaccine slightly more preferable in your own particular case

Johnson & Johnson

  • This is a single-dose vaccine. You only need one shot to be fully vaccinated.

Moderna

  • This is a two-dose series vaccine. You must receive two shots, separated by at least one month apart to be fully vaccinated.
  • Women younger than 50 years old should be made aware of the rare risk of blood clots with low platelets after vaccination with Johnson & Johnson. The Moderna vaccine does not have the same documented effects. For these women (where a choice of vaccines is available) there is a preference to have a Moderna vaccination.

Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 (coronavirus) vaccine

Life Savers ER is now offering the Johnson & Johnson (J&J/Janssen) COVID-19 vaccination through our partnership with Foyé MD.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is one of three COVID-19 vaccines that is currently authorized for use in the United States under Emergency Use Authorization.

FAQs about the Johnson & Johnson vaccine

How old do I have to be to get the vaccine?

Any adult over the age of 18 is eligible to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

How many doses will I need?

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has one great advantage over other vaccines on the market -it is a single dose vaccination. That means if you receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, you only need one appointment to have one shot of the vaccination. That’s it.

Is this vaccine safe?

Before any vaccine is released to the general public it must undergo rigorous clinical trials and testing. Vaccines are cleared for use only when they meet FDA safety guidelines and standards. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine (as with the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines) have been granted Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA.

Who should get this vaccination?

  • Any adult over the age of 18 that has not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • Those who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past should still get vaccinated.
  • Those who prefer to receive a single-shot vaccination regimen instead of two shots.

Who should not get this vaccination?

  • Those who have experienced a severe allergic reaction to any ingredients of this vaccine. The ingredients of the vaccine can be found here: https://www.fda.gov/media/146305/download
  • Women younger than 50 years old should be made aware of the rare risk of blood clots with low platelets after vaccination with Johnson & Johnson. Although the vaccination is still considered safe for women in this age group, women who fall in this category should consider other COVID-19 vaccines where this risk has not been seen. However, it is still important to weigh your own personal risk of going unvaccinated versus the rare risk of this side effect. If in doubt, speak to your doctor.

How long after receiving the vaccine will I have protection against COVID-19?

According to the FDA, people have the most protection 2 weeks after getting the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.=

Remember, no vaccine on the market (including the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine) will give anyone 100% protection from catching COVID-19. What the Johnson & Johnson vaccination does, as with the other vaccines, is ensure that if you do get infected with COVID-19 that your risk of ending up in the hospital or dying from the virus is extremely low. The vaccination protects against death and hospitalization.

Can I be around other people after I get the shot?

As mentioned above, it will take 2 weeks after receiving the vaccination to have protection against the virus. After this time you can officially consider yourself ‘fully vaccinated’ against COVID-19.

Once you’re fully vaccinated, the CDC guidelines suggest that:

  • You can resume activities that you did prior to the pandemic.
  • You can resume activities without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.
  • If you travel in the United States, you do not need to get tested before or after travel or self-quarantine after travel.

What are the side effects of the vaccination?

In clinical trials, side effects were common within 7 days of getting vaccinated but were mostly mild to moderate. Side effects included

  • Injection site reactions: pain, redness of the skin, and swelling.
  • General side effects: headache, feeling very tired, muscle aches, nausea, fever.

What are the benefits of getting vaccinated?

  • For most people, getting vaccinated will give them more freedom to visit family, friends and socialize as they did pre-pandemic.
  • Attending crowded places (ie. sporting facilities, theme parks or movies) is easier to do.
  • The vaccine has a high efficacy at preventing hospitalization and death in people who do get sick with COVID-19.
  • Early evidence suggests that the J&J vaccine might provide protection against asymptomatic infection, which is when a person gets infected with COVID-19 but does not get sick.

Can pregnant and breastfeeding women get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine?

  • While there have been no specific studies in these groups, there is no contraindication to receiving this vaccination if you fall within this category. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women should discuss vaccinations with their healthcare providers prior to receiving them.

Moderna vaccine

Life Savers ER will be offering the Moderna COVID-19 vaccination through our partnership with Foyé MD.

The Moderna vaccine is one of three COVID-19 vaccines that is currently authorized for use in the United States under Emergency Use Authorization.

FAQs about the Moderna vaccine

How old do I have to be to get the vaccine?

Any adult over the age of 18 is eligible to receive the Moderna vaccine.

How many doses will I need?

The Moderna vaccine is a two-shot series. That means you need to get one shot, wait at least one month and then receive a second shot. You are not considered “fully vaccinated” until you have received both shots.

How long do I have to wait before receiving my second shot?

The minimum amount of time between the first and second dose should be at least 1 month.

Can I just get one shot of the Moderna vaccine?

The Moderna vaccine has been designed specifically as a two-dose series. That means you need both shots to be fully protected against the COVID-19 virus. A single shot on its own will not provide you with the highest level of protection possible.

Is this vaccine safe?

Before any vaccine is released to the general public it must undergo rigorous clinical trials and testing. Vaccines are cleared for use only when they meet FDA safety guidelines and standards. The Moderna vaccine (as with the Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines) have been granted Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA.

What are the side effects of the vaccination?

The most commonly reported side effects, which typically last several days, are: pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes in the same arm as the injection, nausea and vomiting, and fever.

Additionally, people tended to experience these side effects more commonly after the second dose of the vaccine.

Who should get this vaccination?

  • Any adult over the age of 18 that has not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • Women younger than 50 years old who are concerned about the rare risk of blood clots associated with Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
  • Those who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past should still get vaccinated.

Who should not get this vaccination?

How long after receiving the vaccine will I have protection against COVID-19?

According to the FDA, people have the most protection 2 weeks after getting the second shot of the Moderna vaccine.
