When the sun dipped below the Houston skyline on a warm Monday evening on September 11, 2023. The cheers of the crowd at the inaugural Battle of the Badges Charity Baseball Game echoed through the air, leaving a resounding mark on the city. Houston, often celebrated for its diversity and unity, witnessed an extraordinary event that brought together the city’s heroes in blue and red, all in the spirit of charity and camaraderie.
Presented by Life Savers Emergency Room and hosted at Rice University’s Reckling Park, this unforgettable event showcased the exceptional collaboration between the Houston Police Department (HPD) and Houston Fire Department (HFD). This memorial game was held in honor of Patriot Day, to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. With the generous support of sponsors like Fleming Law and Lone Star Beer, the game not only entertained Houstonians but also raised funds for vital causes, emphasizing the power of teamwork both on and off the field.
“We believe in giving back to the community that has given us so much,” said Dr. Foye Ikyaator, Medical Director of Life Savers Emergency Room. “The Battle of the Badges Charity Baseball Game is not just a game; it’s a celebration of the courage and dedication of our local heroes while supporting essential charitable initiatives.”

The game’s first pitch was thrown by Billy Forney, who was in Tower One of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. The event raised over $5,000 for the family of HFD firefighter Chase Fleming, who died in an off-duty vehicle crash in August and Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Joseph Anderson, who was shot during a traffic stop. Life Savers Emergency Room and Rice University, collaborated with HPD’s Lawdawgs baseball team to make this vision a reality.
Officer Nicholas said “This event is a testament to the strong bond between law enforcement and firefighters. We may wear different uniforms, but our commitment to the community unites us.”

Sponsors: Pillars of Support
Fleming Law and Lone Star Beer played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the event. Fleming Law, a renowned legal firm known for its dedication to justice, stepped up as a key sponsor, exemplifying their belief in the power of community engagement. Lone Star Beer added a touch of tradition and pride to the event, becoming the official beer sponsor. Their contribution not only quenched the thirst of the attendees but also fueled the spirit of giving.
We are proud to support an event that brings together our local heroes and the community,” stated David Fleming, founder of Fleming Law. “Their dedication and sacrifice inspire us, and we are honored to contribute to this noble cause.”

Attendees of the game had a one of kind experience with a food truck park, face painting, mascots, a 7th Inning Stretch “Battle of the Branches” — a 4-way tug of war between Army, Navy, Marine Corps, & Air Force, a 50/50 Raffle, and a silent auction. The game was a testament to the unity of purpose and the strength of collective action. First responders, often unsung heroes, were celebrated not only for their bravery but also for their compassion. The event became a platform for the community to express gratitude, forging stronger bonds between the people and those who dedicate their lives to public service.

The cheers of the crowd, the crack of the bat, and the laughter of children echoed across the field, creating an atmosphere of sheer joy. Families, friends, and strangers came together, not as individuals, but as one collective heartbeat of a city. The Battle of the Badges Charity Baseball Game demonstrated that when a community unites, incredible things happen. It showcased the beauty of collaboration, reminding us all that we are stronger together.

Looking Ahead: A Legacy of Giving
As the sun set over the Houston skyline, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, the inaugural Battle of the Badges Charity Baseball Game came to an end.
