Back pain is one of the most common medical conditions experienced in the United States. It is estimated that up to 84 percent of adults have low back pain at some time in their lives.
Back pain can be caused by a known physical injury such as following a car accident. It may also be the cause of a muscle or ligament strain, arthritis, or related another medical condition. Whatever the cause, it is important to know when to seek urgent care for back pain.
Most long-standing back pain can be dealt with by your primary provider but urgent help should be sought if one or more of these apply:
- Back pain is unrelenting and not relieved by rest.
- Back pain has come on suddenly (ie. within the past few days or hours).
- Back pain occurs following a traumatic accident such as a car accident, a fall, a sporting injury, or other physical events.
- Back pain that is accompanied by symptoms such as numbness or weakness in the limbs or buttocks
- Back pain that is accompanied by loss of control of the bladder or bowel.
- Back pain that radiates to the abdomen in front.
For individuals with certain medical conditions, back pain may signify a more serious issue. This includes patients with:
- A history of cancer
- Recent injury or trauma, especially in the elderly
- Prolonged use of steroids
If back pain falls under one or more of the categories mentioned above, visit your nearest emergency room.
Management
Management of back pain will depend on the exact cause. Temporary management of muscular pain can include
- Applying heat for 20 minutes to the affected area, alternating with ice if desired
- Continuing to move as much as possible with very low-impact activity
- Over-the-counter painkillers
Long-term back pain management options should always be discussed with your doctor.
